OUR WORK IN VAAGSLID.
it was on 10-12-1942 that Kjelstrup and I separated from the other two in order to proceed westwards to the HAUKELID road. We followed the STORHIDDERDAL, but when crossing the mountains to the BORADAL we were overtaken by a storm. It was on the same day that Helberg and Haugland lost one another on VOLLEVATH. The wind was directly against us. We were absolutely knocked over by the storm. We often had to crawl on all fours to get along. It became too bad altogether and we had to turn back.
On 12-12-1942 the weather was fine and we reached VAAGSLID in the evening, putting up at VAAGSLID Hotel. They did not take guests in the winter-time, but we were allowed to stay the night there all the same. The reason why we stayed there and not in one of the saeters outside the perish, was that we thought that it would be easier and arouse less attention for us to get into touch with the right contact from there. 2nd/Lieut. Knut Haukelid had given us the name of his cousin, Knut Haukelisaeter, as the man we ought to make contact with in preference to any others. At first he was very sceptical and took us for provocateurs, or something of the sort, but after I had told him some stories I had got from Haukelid, which only he and Haukelid could know, he was convinced.
This took place while we walked up and down on the main road. There was not a single place in the whole parish where we could talk undisturbed, or without creating attention. It was then decided that we were to meet him on 15-12-1942 in Haukelid's hut at LANGSØ. He could not come before then. Also, he had just got out of bed after having pneumonia and it was therefore possible that he might have to send another man instead of coming himself.
In the meantime. Kjelstrup and I had to get away from the parish. There was nowhere for us to stay and it wouldn't do for us to be seen in Knut Haukelisaeter's company. We therefore went to HAUKELIDSAETER mountain hut and stayed there for two nights.
We reached LANGSØ at the time agreed on and met two lads there. They were Olav Haukelisaeter, Knut's younger brother, and Tor Vinje. 2nd/Lieut. Haukelid had told us that both of these were first-class lads.
We now received full information about the organisation and we made plans and agreements for the immediate future. What these lads had to tell us about the commotion our arrival in the parish had caused was very interesting. The cover story we had given was that we were on holiday and had crossed the vidda on skis. This was the only possible explanation that suited the equipement and the clothing we had, but it was queer that townspeople should come to the parish at this time of year and it was queerer still that anybody should be making a sleeping bag trip over the vidda.
All the people in the parish were in the habit of getting together at one of the farms where they still had a wireless, to hear the news from London. At these gatherings Kjelstrup and I were shown much flattering attention.
There were three theories about us:
a. We were good Norwegians who had esaceped from a German concentration camp, or from work on fortifications.
b. We were British agents.
c. We were working for the Gestapo.
Theory (b) had the most adherents. Some said we were too poorly dressed and ragged to be agents; Kjelstrup, by the way, had big rents in his anorakk trousers. It was also hardly believable that we were Gestapo men, on account of a blunder we had committed at VAAGSLID Hotel. We had not seen a newspaper for ever so long and read one ther eagerly. there was an article about Editor Øivin Langes' death. "Is he dead?" exclaimed one of us. But he had been dead for at least a fortnight and a German agent at any rate must have known that, they thought.
I have dealt with this matter in so much detail in order to show how precarious conditions are in a mountain parish, how easily everything is seen through and how difficult the working conditions are. Everything that is a little out of the ordinary is immediately seized upon, and becomes a subject of discussion for quite a long time. It is not quite so bad in the larger parishes in ØVRE TELEMARK, but the question of security is a very difficult one everywhere. The situation is otherwise during the summer, when there are lots of people from the towns on holiday in these districts.
The lads went to the parish after we had arranged to meet again in the LANSØ hut at a time in January agreed on. We hoped to have finished the sabotage job by that time and that we therefore might possibly be able to get a plane load of arms and equipment.
I now went sick and had to stay in bed for two days. When I got up again I was so weak that I should never have managed to get back to the GRASDALEN hut by crossing the mountains. We therefore had to make use of some other means of getting about than on skis. We went on ski as far as the neighbourhood of HAUKELID. The next day we took the motor-bus to AAMOT and in the evening went on to RAULAND on ski by the main road. Here we heard for the first time about the Germans' razzia. We were back in GRASDAL on 08-12-1942 (?).
In January Kjelstrup went westwards alone, as I mentioned before. He took the brothers Haukelisaeter with him to the container depot and handed them four Stenguns with ammunitin and 24 handgrenades, these were then placed in a handydump by the HAUKELID road. He also made new arrangements about a possible reception committee for dropping and about food in the LANGSØ hut.
The food problem in the west was very difficult. We would hardly reckon on getting anything at all in the parish and the possibilities of shooting wild reindeer were small.
THE ORGANISATION.
The organisation in VAAKSLID was very loosely constructed. It was an entirely independent enterprise, with no contact with OSLO or with any other organisation. There was no actual leader, but Knut Haukelisaeter was the leading light. We were told that what was most needed of all was a leader of military training and authority.
The lads - with only three or foor of whom I came into contact - were fine types. Tough, practical and cautious mountain folk. All of them fine shots, who were always doing some illegal reindeer hunting. The lack of military training among some of them was more than balanced by the experience they had gained through reindeer hunting. A good reindeer hunter does not need much special military training to become a good soldier.
We fixed the area boundaries of this group at: from DYRESKAR in the West to FLAATHYL in the East, inclusive. 15 men
are organised in this area. This number can be easily increased, but it is hardly praticable to have a larger group and in any case that should not be done until the invasion takes place.
All the lads are in possession of Krag rifles, but some of these are worn out and in very bad condition. They are very short of ammunition and the stocks are constantly being depleted owing to the reindeer hunting. There are hardly 25 rounds per rifle. As I have mentioned, the group has taken over 4 Stenguns with ammunition and 24 handgrenades.
A speedy mobilisation of this group can not at present be carried out, because most of the lads have hidden their rifles far up in the mountains, in the reindeer tracts towards SAUERFLOTT.
OTHER GROUPS.
Further east in VINJE there are other organised groups, but we had no opportunity of making a closer investigation into these.
GERMAN MEASURES IN THE AREA.
All bridges in the area have demolition chambers and in many places the road has been made ready for undermining, or for the placing of roadmines. Bunkers and gunpositions were built at FLAATHYL. BONZO have now an exact knowledge of all German undertakings. The have accurate sletches of the fortifications at FLAATHYL and all details.

We fixed the area boundaries of this group at: from DYRESKAR in the West to FLAATHYL in the East, inclusive. 15 men
are organised in this area. This number can be easily increased, but it is hardly praticable to have a larger group and in any case that should not be done until the invasion takes place.
All the lads are in possession of Krag rifles, but some of these are worn out and in very bad condition. They are very short of ammunition and the stocks are constantly being depleted owing to the reindeer hunting. There are hardly 25 rounds per rifle. As I have mentioned, the group has taken over 4 Stenguns with ammunition and 24 handgrenades.
A speedy mobilisation of this group can not at present be carried out, because most of the lads have hidden their rifles far up in the mountains, in the reindeer tracts towards SAUERFLOTT.
OTHER GROUPS.
Further east in VINJE there are other organised groups, but we had no opportunity of making a closer investigation into these.
GERMAN MEASURES IN THE AREA.
All bridges in the area have demolition chambers and in many places the road has been made ready for undermining, or for the placing of roadmines. Bunkers and gunpositions were built at FLAATHYL. BONZO have now an exact knowledge of all German undertakings. The have accurate sletches of the fortifications at FLAATHYL and all details.
