Grouse
The signalmaster at the Wireless Station, to whom I have just spoken on the scramber, gives the following explanation concerning Grouse.
OnFriday Saterurday October 30th 31th 1700 hours GMT, Grouse came up on the air, using a stange call sign. As, however, Home Station were listening for Grouse on this wavelength, they guessed it must be him and carried on the usual communication signals to establish satisfactory contact.
Grouse gave a QRX for the following day, Saturday, at a given time. When he was off the air, Home Station investigated the question of call signs and discovered that the copy of his Signal Plan they had been using was an old one, superseded by the one Grouse was actually using. Thus, no doubt exists in the Signalmaster's mind that the contact was actually with Grouse and that everything will be all right now that they have obtained the Signal Plan that Grouse is using.
Grouse did not, as it turned out, come up at the time given on Saturday. This may be due to a variety of circumstances and should not be taken as unduly serious at present.
The signalmaster has been reminded of the urgency of the latest telegram waiting for Grouse.
Lark
Lark did not come up on his 0830 GMT sked today. However, he has a regular sked at 1115 and 2315 today and his special afternoon one at 1430 this afternoon.

GROUSE took with him into the field both an S-Phone and an Eureka set. Instructions which he acknowledged were issued to him to destroy the former. The latter was to be used in connection with an important combined operation which was attempted last night, but did not succeed. Under D/CD(O)'s instructions, however, it is intended to attack the same target during the December moon, if possible, using our own personnel. Instructions have therefore been issued to GROUSE to hide the Eureka set in a safe place in order that it may be brought into use next month. D/CD(O) asked me to inform you of this.

The Grouse party were the advance party for the operation and their code name has been bandied about too freely.
I recomment, therefore, that the name be changed and that the use of the present code name dropped entirely.

The only knowledge we have about this particular case is as follows:
When the GROUSE stores were packed for the first time SN/A.1 went down to the packing station solely to ensure that the men concerned knew what was in the containers and where they could find the articles which they might require immediately on landing.
At some later period just before the operation was due to go, Captain Buckmaster rand up SN/A.1 from STS-61 and said that:
a. the operation was due to go that night and
b. the acid from the batteries had spilled and damaged certain articles in the container. These articles had been
removed and needed replacement.
SN/A.1 then procured transport and made hasty arrangement to obtain new batteries and a new tent and the other articles mentioned, was driven straight down to STS-61 and handed the replacements over to Captain Buckmaster's staff with instructions that before packing them the acid should be emptied out of the batteries into a special earthenware jar which he had obtained and that a match-stick should be placed in the hole in the top of the batteries.
We have been struggling for some considerable time to obtain non-spillable accumulators. Only recently have we found that suitable articles were being obtained my MY/O. We immediately indented upon him for a supply for CRAFFINCH and have made arrangements now by which we can tap this source through MS.3.
Yesterday I discussed this particular question of supply with MS.A who is fully appreciative of the situation and of the difficulties that have been experienced.
