DOCUMENTEN Benny Biallosterski
Persoonskaart Bennie in Buchenwalt.

What appears to have been the last deportation train left Westerbork on September 13, 1944. It carried two transports: one to Bergen-Belsen with 268 deportees aboard and another to Auschwitz, carrying 11 passengers.
The source of these data is a document from the archives of Hanns Albin Rauter, High Police and SS Leader (HSSPF-der Höhere SS- und Polizeiführer) in the Netherlands. It comprises an overview of 7 groups of Jews, followed by an itemized account of each list separately with the name, date of birth, and occupation of each deportee.
According to this document, 6 groups of deportees were sent to Bergen-Belsen. 69 Jews had been placed in a special group by order of Wilhelm Harster. 31 of them evidently held Paraguayan citizenship. 24 were listed as diamantaires. However, since one more name had been added in handwriting to the typed list, this group may have numbered 25. 12 belonged to a group of people whose “racial origin” remained somewhat vague (Abstammungsuntersuchungen); some of them, apparently, were “second-grade” Jews (a Nazi legal definition for those who had one Jewish grandparent), and the like. There were 50 “unknown” children who may have been in hiding until then, who were considered Jewish. 55 deportees held were foreign nationals, Turkish in many cases, and the remark “apparently Egyptian” appears next to the name of one Jewish woman. Finally, there were 58 “Mischlinge” (offspring of mixed Jewish-Gentile marriages) who had committed various infractions.
Fredrika Elly Kulker (b. 1925), although registered as a seamstress, was listed among the diamantaires because she had a relative in that trade. In her 1958 testimony, she recalled being arrested on June 20, 1943, taken to Westerbork, sent home, and arrested again on September 29. That day, the eve of Rosh Hashana, some 2,000 Jews in Amsterdam were taken into custody, including the members and leaders of the Joodse Raad (Jewish council). Kulker recounts that at least 3 deportees managed to escape from the train; one of them was Gideon Drach (b. 1916), a member of a Jewish resistance group.
Another person aboard this transport, Mary Andriaansz-Groen, related that she had been deported with a group of children on a train consisting of freight cars. To provide for the youngsters, straw had been placed on the floors as mattresses and makeshift tables and small benches had been provided. “We received milk bottles that contained water and milk from the Dutch,” as well as an “old-fashioned” laundry basket filled with sandwiches. However, she continued, the Germans advised the deportees to throw these provisions out because they were told: “You’re going to a camp where you’ll have everything better.” They did not know the journey would be so lengthy and regretted having done so. Aboard the train, Andriaansz-Groen continued, the passengers sang songs and told stories. The children were tired and ill; several had not yet learned to control their bodily functions. Thus, the situation was dire. “The important people who dealt in diamonds,” in contrast, sat in a passenger compartment. It was impossible to see out of the sealed freight cars because the only light that entered came through slots in the roof. The passengers had no idea where they were going. When the doors were opened on the only one occasion after the train had stood for hours under a sizzling sun the adults tried to protect the children and conceal them from the Germans who had promised them fresh water and were actually keeping their word. The water that they had brought, however, was of no use to the infant Henriëtte Delia (Jetje) Hamburger (b. December 24, 1943), who died mid-journey, probably of dehydration. “I couldn’t give her a thing,” Andriaansz-Groen explained. “The milk we’d received from Westerbork went bad after only one day.”
According to this testimony, the journey lasted three days and when the train reached Bergen the deportees were forced to hike to the camp. The only exceptions were the children and Andriaansz-Groen herself who were driven there in trucks.
Apart from the baby, whose place of burial is unknown, at least 4 children from this transport died by the middle of June 1945. Although Bergen-Belsen was liberated on April 15 that year, tens of thousands died afterward due to malnutrition, grim conditions, and sundry diseases.
