To build his substitution square, the agent writes out the diagram A-Z horizontally and A-Z vertically.
The prearranged letter for setting his substitution square in this case is "D". The agent now writes "D" in the top left hand corner of the A-Z square and the rest of the alphabet is copied backwards, both horizontally and Vertically, viz:

SYNOPSIS OF THE ABOVE SYSTEM.

Key-length for the double transposition process must vary between 22 and 41.
De sleutel lengte van het dubbele transpositie proces mag variëren tussen 22 en 41 tekens.

If the agent wishes to send long messages, he must be given two or more poems and he will then write into his first transposition cage as many poems as he may necessary to provide him with sufficient One-Time-Pad groups to re-encipher his clear text messages. The transposition key will always be taken from the first poem that he writes into his cage.
Indien de agent lange berichten wil verzenden, dan moet hij van twee of meer versjes voorzien worden en hij moet zijn eerste vierkant voorzien van zoveel mogelijk versjes als hij maar kan, om hem op deze wijze te voorzien van voldoende One-Time-Pad groepen om zijn bericht te kunnen coderen. De transpositie sleutel wordt altijd uit het eerste versje gehaald en die schrijft hij in zijn vierkant op.

The great advantage of the mental One-Time-Pad system is that the security is such that the minimum number of letters that need to be passed is 5 and not, as with the ordinary double transposition, 150.
Het grote voordeel van het mental One-Time-Pad systeem is dat de veiligheid is dusdanig dat het minimale aantal tekens dat verwerkt moet worden is 5 en niet, zoals in het gebruikelijke dubbele transpositie systeem, 150.

No attempt is made to hide the fact that this system is slow to use at first, but nevertheless the security of the system and the fact that it requires no tangible elements more than compensates for this dis-advantage.
Er is geen poging gedaan om te verbloemen dat dit systeem traag is bij eerste gebruik, maar desondanks is de veiligheid van het systeem en het feit dat geen tastbare elementen toegevoegd hoeven te worden compenseert dit nadeel.

The mental One-Time-Pad system is intended primarily to be a reserve to the letter One-Time-Pad. If however, circumstances make it impossible for a letter One-Time-Pad to be used, the mental One-Time-Pad should be the main system.
Het mental One-Time-Pad systeem is in eerste instantie bedoeld als een reserve systeem ter vervanging van de gedrukte One-Time-Pad. Als de omstandigheden het echter onmogelijk maken om de gedrukte One-Time-Pad te gebruiken , dan wordt het mental One-Time-Pad het toe te passen systeem.

As soon as you confirm that the above instructions are understood, we will forward you a supplementary pamphlet of the mental One-Time-Pad which is exclusively for the use of the Homestation and we will give certain directions which will ensure that the enemy cryptopgrapher is never able to tell from an analysis of traffic whether a letter One-Time-Pad or a mental One-Time-Pad is in use.
